Review: Felsted moved into the regional semi-final
winning their Round 5 Daily Mail Vase match against Beths Grammar School. In a
tight first half chances were few and far between with defences on top. Matt
Lumb demonstrated that at full back he had the pace and ability to read the
game collecting many kicks, clearing either with the boot or making valuable
ground and making vital one on one tackles. Injuries to Simon Holmes and Stefan
Warner disrupted the team line up but the versatility of many players ensured
that tackles were made and shape maintained. With Ehren Painter coming on it
was the first time since the second game of the season that both he and Matt
Lumb were playing at the same time! Felsted were awarded a penalty midway
through the second half which James Lennon confidently converted from outside
the 22. A poor reception from the kick off allowed Beths to respond immediately
scoring in the corner an unconverted try. Again Felsted were under pressure but
from a long relieving kick Alex Jackson was obstructed. A surprised James
Lennon was instructed to go for goal from long distance and he was successful!
With not long to go George Hitchcock made a break from the half way line. On
the 22 he was held by one player, on the 5 yard line he was held by two. Over
the try line, he forced the ball down held by three players. James Lennon was
successful with the kick. With the last move of the match Beths scored an
unconverted try.
